As its title says, it arrived and I finally watched it. Good science fiction films are always worth waiting for. Furthermore, not everyone is able not to fall into the dead easy and trite of the genre.

I was just discussing it with a friend on Facebook…after all, Denis Villeneuve might not have been a bad choice to direct “Blade Runner 2” after so many years. Especially after some of Ridley Scott’s latest bungles – he went from the top with “A Good Year” to the bottom – crashing with astonishing ease in “Black Hawk Down”.

Going back to Arrival… it has it all. Two wonderful actors with the most natural chemistry in the whole world. A script that keeps you busy and rooted in the plot: what happens, how it happens and even when it happens … There is tension, resolution, existential drama, philosophy… I don’t have enough words. There is nothing better than a good science fiction movie that leaves you with that trace, and it guides you to reflection while you’re tasting it and especially when you are left dazzled watching the credits and thinking about the universe, all and nothing.

Best of attending the premiere was that one of the main actors, Jeremy Renner, finally dared to mention the styling (not to mention the look) of the director of the festival. And, now that we’re talking about her, I cannot stand her pomposity and ceremony each time she introduces any actor or when she asks them questions…OK, I have to admit it…pure envy…this is what’s behind all this. She has been introducing people like: Isabelle Huppert (OMG), Ryan Gosling, Francois Ozon (he had to be French, they certainly had that “je ne sais quoi”), J.A. Bayona, Sigourney Weaver…and so on.

Amy Adams was simply splendid, as if she weren’t normally. Although it is a less lucid role – after 6 nominations – I think No.7 is coming with this performance, no doubt. Lately, I’ve been thinking that the Academy might have something against redheads…can it be possible?… because this is starting to resemble what Julianne Moore went through until she won the Oscar for “Still Alice” (who, by the way, I had the total pleasure of flattering at this year’s BAFTA by simply telling her how amazing and beautiful she was – I must have said it very eloquently ’cause she stop signing autographs, looked me in the eye and thanked me – OK, it’s official, now I can die in peace! ;-).

Here in the UK,  they will have to wait until Jan. 13 for the premiere and in Spain… it doesn’t even have a release date. Strongly recommended for fans of science fiction and for all those who like to think more than usual.

Como si de agua de mayo se tratara, por fin he visto una de esas películas a la que le tenía ganas, “Arrival”. La buena ciencia ficción siempre se hace esperar. Además, no todo el mundo es capaz de no caer en lo facilón y manido del género.

Acabo de comentarlo con un colega en Facebook y puede que no haya sido mala elección para dirigir “Blade Runner 2”, después de tantísimos años. Sobre todo, después de algunas de las pifias a las que nos tiene acostumbrados Ridley Scott. Sube hasta la cima con “Un buen año”) y se se estrella con una facilidad pasmosa en “Black Hawk derribado”.

Volviendo a Arrival…, es que lo tiene todo. Dos pedazo de actores con un quimicón de lo más natural. Un guión que te mantiene ocupado y enraizado en la trama, de lo que pasa, de cómo pasa y hasta de cuándo pasa… Hay tensión, resolución, drama existencial, filosofía….no me llegan las palabras. No hay nada mejor que una buena peli de ciencia ficción que te deja con ese poso, y te inclina a la reflexión mientras la estás degustando y cuando te quedas embobada viendo los créditos y pensando en lo divino y lo humano.

Lo mejor de asistir al estreno ha sido que uno de los protas, Jeremy Renner, por fin se haya atrevido a mencionar el estilismo (por no decir la pinta, al más puro estilo Agatha Ruiz de la Prada) de la directora del festival. Y, ya de paso que estoy con el tema, se echa unas flores que para qué…, vale, lo admito, parte de esto viene de la pura envidia que le tengo por la gente con la que se codea. Ha salido al escenario a presentar a gente como Isabelle Huppert, Ryan Gosling, François Ozon (tenía que ser francés, qué será ese “je ne sais quoi” que tienen), J.A. Bayona, Sigourney Weaver…etc.

Amy Adams ha estado sencillamente espléndida, como si no lo estuviera habitualmente. Es un papel menos lucido, pero después de 6 nominaciones, creo que le va a caer la número 7 con esta interpretación, sin duda. ¿Será que la Academia tiene algo en contra de las pelirrojas? (pregunta retórica…esto de los blogs mola, jijijij)…porque esto empieza a parecerse a lo de Julianne Moore (a la cual tuve el placer de halagar este año en los BAFTA diciéndole que era sencillamente increíble y preciosa – debí de decirlo con tal elocuencia que paró de firmar, y me miró a los ojos para darme las gracias -es oficial, ¡ya puedo morir en paz!).

Aquí en el Reino Unido hay que esperar hasta el 13 de enero para verla y en España…no hay ni fecha de estreno. Totalmente recomendable para los amantes de la ciencia ficción y para todos aquellos a los que les guste que les remuevan algo por dentro y les hagan pensar más de lo habitual.
